I work in a pharmacy: any Rx drugs you are taking should be cleared by your doctor if you are breastfeeding. And even then, there should be a warning sticker on your Rx bottle that says you shouldn't take it if you are. As far as I know any kind of allergy medicine is safe to use in that case. For Hives, I would recommend taking Benadryl. It comes in both a tablet form and a cream. Use as directed; if it's the tablet, just look at the box and take however many it says according to your age, if it's the cream, apply it to the infected area. Hope that helps!

There are several natural remedies as well. I am currently taking Atarax for hives but like you makes me sleepy. So in the daytime and for a quick fix I use a mixture of Lavender and Chamomile essential oils mixed with simple lotion(fragrance free) Or you can take a bath in OATMEAL or use chamomile tea....steep several bags to make a very strong tea mixture and just swab over affected areas. Tea tree oil is also a good one. Make sure to use all of these externally and do not ingest them,HOPE IT HELPS

Oatmeal! I suffer from chronic uticarial vasculitis with lupus and get huge, swelling, connected hives that turn into bruises. I've had it for 7 years but only in the last two years have they found the drug coctail that works for me. However, there is help by taking oatmeal baths which really relieves the itching. Aveeno makes a collodial oatmeal bath, but the wal-mart Equate brand works just as well and is cheaper. I usally take a bath with at least 2 packets and a cup of epsom salts for the swelling and joint pain I get with the hives. You can also get oatmeal moisturizer that helps as well. Avon, Equate and Aveeno all make one and I carry the purse sized tube by Avon with me at all times so that I can apply it on the go. I've been on almost every combination of anti-histamines you can name and they all have two things in common: fatigue and drowsiness. I would definitely ask your pharmacists whether they can be absorbed in breast milk. Also, you might want to check out the chronic uticarial site in yahoo groups. They are a wonderful forum from those of us who go through life hiving. They also have great information, the latest studies, and a recipe for a cromlyn cream you can make yourself to treat the hives, even some diets that some say work. E-mail me anytime for support, believe me, I understand what it is like!
