what is the difference between an antibiotic rash and a hives rash?

   Hives describe a specific skin disturbance. They are round, raised wheals and are white or light colored surrounded by a well-defined red area. Hives itch and are allergy-related. They can be either a systemic reaction or a result of contact.

   An allergic skin reaction to an antibiotic may be hives but it may also be a red, bumpy rash or a flat, red rash surrounded by a red area. The rash may or may not itch. An antibiotic reaction is systemic, not contact.

   Anaphylaxis usually involves some form of urticaria (skin disturbance) on the skin and in the mouth, swelling in the throat and respiratory difficulty. If you are unsure of what you may be experiencing, call your doctor to report this.

   if you are allergic to an antibiotic, you may get a rash that is hot and itchy….if you are taking an antibiotic and you get hives, it can be much more serious…stop the antibiotic and call the doctor…if you continue to take them, you could have an anaphylactic reaction where you get hives internally too and you cannot breathe…life threatening
